How it sounds

Maple gives a full, warm midrange and a clear attack, while the 45° edges add sensitivity – the drum responds to soft ghost notes as well as to hard backbeats. In the studio it tunes easily for the song: low and fat for soul and vintage material, high and tight for funk and pop. Close-miked (e.g. with a Shure SM57) it has few unwanted overtones, so it needs very little dampening.
