FX3? Or maybe FX2 or A7S III?

So — which camera do you actually need (not just the one "everyone wants")?

If you work in the creative industry, you know the drill:
"I'll take the FX3, because everyone shoots on it"

And fair enough — the Sony FX3 is a great camera.
But... in many situations a different choice can be equally good.

That is exactly why this article exists. Let us start with the most important point: there is no "best camera". There is only the camera best suited to the job.

SONY FX3 — king of the film set

The Sony FX3 was built for one purpose:
to record for a long time, stably, and without stress

Why does everyone choose it?

  • Active cooling (i.e. no overheating)
  • 4K 120fps (slow motion dream)
  • Compact "cinema body" (rig it however you want)
  • No recording limits

But:

  • No viewfinder (EVF), making it less comfortable for stills — which makes it less "universal"

Conclusion: The FX3 is the ideal choice if:
— you shoot for long periods
— you do commercial productions / interviews / adverts
— you need reliability

SONY A7S III — the perhaps underrated "safe choice"

The Sony A7SIII is a camera that...
does everything well

What sets it apart?

  • The same excellent sensor as the FX3
  • Viewfinder (a huge plus for stills and run-and-gun)
  • Top-tier autofocus
  • The same 4K 120fps
  • Legendary low light — dual native ISO and exceptional sensor sensitivity
  • Often called the "king of low light" — which is sometimes exactly why you should choose it!

But:

  • No active cooling (requires care during long recording sessions) — less "cinematic" ergonomics

Conclusion: The best choice if:
— you shoot both video and stills
— you shoot shorter forms and work in challenging lighting
— you want one camera "for everything"

SONY FX2 — the one finally worth appreciating

The Sony FX2 is the most underrated option of the three.

Seriously.

What does it do differently?

  • 33 MP (finally sensible stills — not 10 or 12 MP like the FX3 or A7SIII :))
  • 4K oversampling (sharper image than the FX3) — so in some respects is it not a better hybrid: video + photo?
  • AI autofocus (more "intelligent" subject tracking)

Where is the catch?

  • No 4K 120fps — so it is... more "of a compromise" than the FX3

Conclusion: The FX2 is the sweet spot if:
— you create content (video + photo)
— you shoot adverts, social media, lifestyle
— you need one body for everything
— you do not need 120fps in 4K
